Sustainability and heavy industry must go hand-in-hand

At Directional Boring, environmental protection is not an afterthought — it's built into the way we do business. Whether we’re performing precision line boring, on-site welding, or mobile machining, we take deliberate steps to reduce our environmental footprint and protect the communities where we work.

We believe that heavy industry and sustainability can and must go hand-in-hand.

Our Commitment to Environmental Responsibility

Responsible Waste Handling

  • Metal shavings, weld slag, and grinding dust are collected and disposed of in compliance with local regulations.

  • Used lubricants, cutting fluids, and oils are stored in spill-proof containers and disposed of by certified waste management providers.

  • Welding rods, electrodes, and consumables are tracked and handled to avoid contamination of soil or water.

Spill Prevention & Response

  • All service trucks and mobile machining units are equipped with spill containment kits.

  • We use drip pans, absorbents, and secondary containment when working with hydraulic lines, coolant systems, and fuel-powered equipment.

  • Our team is trained in hazardous material handling and immediate spill response, ensuring fast action if any containment breach occurs.

Stormwater and Drainage Protection

We work proactively to prevent contamination of natural water sources:

  • Equipment is never washed or cleaned near storm drains or water channels.

  • Any work involving cutting, grinding, or fluid exchange is done with ground barriers and containment mats.

  • Environmental safeguards are tailored to each jobsite, in coordination with the General Contractor and Owner.

Air Quality & Emissions Control

Line boring and field machining can generate fumes, dust, and emissions — but we take steps to minimize exposure and environmental release:

  • Welding and hot work are conducted with proper ventilation and filtration when required.

  • Portable machinery is selected for low-emission output wherever feasible.

  • Idle times are minimized to reduce fuel consumption and emissions from diesel or gas-powered tools.

Reducing Our Carbon Footprint

While our industry requires mobility and heavy equipment, we actively seek opportunities to reduce our carbon footprint:

  • Route planning and logistics are optimized to minimize travel distances between jobsites.

  • We maintain our fleet to peak mechanical efficiency, improving fuel economy and reducing emissions.

  • When possible, we use electric-powered equipment for on-site boring and welding operations.

Training, Compliance & Continuous Improvement

Environmental protection is part of our company culture. That means:

  • All employees receive environmental awareness training as part of their onboarding and ongoing education.

  • We follow all EPA guidelines, local environmental regulations, and client-specific sustainability requirements.

  • We regularly review and improve our field practices to reduce waste, prevent contamination, and operate responsibly.

Zero Tolerance for Environmental Negligence

We hold ourselves and our subcontractors accountable. Any actions that put the environment at risk — whether through negligence or oversight — are met with immediate correction and may result in disciplinary action or jobsite removal.

Partnering for a Cleaner Future

Environmental stewardship is a shared responsibility. When clients hire us, they’re getting more than precision machining — they’re choosing a partner that values sustainability, safety, and the future of our planet.

Whether we’re rebuilding heavy equipment, restoring bore alignments, or machining custom components in the field, we’re committed to leaving a positive environmental legacy wherever we operate.
